This adventure includes an exploration of the rugged untamed coastline we call our Pondoland Paradise. Home to the Mpondo people who lived in Pondoland along with one of the great tribes of Africa, the Xhosa people who, for 300 years, have been the custodians of this gem, this green, pastoral landscape along the coastal belt of the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.
Join us for a 5 day / 4 night adventure surrounded by towering cliffs covered in indigenous forest and beautiful beaches. Explore the rugged coastlines, pristine estuaries and crystal waterfalls in the comfort of two beautiful beach lodges: Mbotyi River Lodge and the Ocean View Hotel.
Early afternoon meet on the outskirts of Lusikisiki, an hour’s drive from Port St Johns or Kokstad, then proceed to the Mbotyi River Lodge for two nights.
The Lodge is situated at the mouth of the Mbotyi River and tidal estuary overlooking a beautiful beach, indigenous forests teeming with birdlife and waterfalls with breath-taking views.
Facilities include a swimming pool, mountain bikes, canoes and a wide variety of sundecks for relaxing. All the rooms are airconditioned, offer tea/coffee making facilities and fridges and most importantly – have uninterrupted sea views.
After settling in you can enjoy a walk on the beach before you make time for an enjoyable dining experience.
Start with early morning coffee and rusks followed by some spare time to walk along the beach or go for a paddle on the magnificent Mbotyi Estuary. Everybody will then enjoy a big breakfast before the vehicles are readied for the day’s outing.
Today a picnic lunch will be enjoyed en route to a Cape Vulture colony of over 170 of Africa’s vulnerable birds which are nesting on the cliffs of a magnificent gorge. Afterwards heading via meandering jeep tracks which will take us along the coastline, using only existing legal tracks thereby avoiding driving on the beach.
We will visit the wreck site of the Grosvenor and get some insight into the unbelievable treasure hunting tactics that people have attempted over the years to retrieve the ship’s alleged secret treasure. Along the way there will be ample time to enjoy the nearby beaches or to cool off under a waterfall.
Return late afternoon to the Lodge where you will be able to enjoy a beach sundowner before dinner is served and you retire for your last night at the Mbotyi River Lodge.
After breakfast we venture towards the Ocean View Hotel in Coffee Bay , our second lodge right on the beach. The trip takes us through the local Magwa tea plantations and past some amazing waterfalls. We will also be visiting a World War II airstrip and bunker complex which was utilised by airmen during the bombings of German U-boats off the Wild Coast.
We arrive at the Ocean View Hotel where you will be accommodated for the next two nights. The light and airy rooms are all comfortably furnished with en suite bathrooms and have spectacular beach and sea views. You will be welcomed by the friendly staff who will tend to your every need. Other amenities include a laundry service, wellness and massage centre and bar facilities.
After check in, unwind with a late afternoon beach walk, a paddle or even cast a line or two.
After a hearty breakfast we depart by vehicle to the famous Wild Coast landmark, the Hole in the Wall rock formation – an area surrounded by vast stretches of unspoiled coastline and some of the most picturesque scenery in South Africa. Our secluded location today makes for excellent bird watching, beach strolls and nature walks and great relaxing.
We depart after breakfast, having bid farewell we find ourselves travelling towards the N2, just west of Mthatha, an approximate 3-hour drive.
