This is a 2 night / 3-day adventure. While some might revel in hot summer holidays spent along lakes and seas, others might find the snow blankets over Lesotho’s Maluti Mountains just as invigorating. During this tour, you will get to see unique frozen waterfalls and iced lakes.
This is one of our shorter adventures but yields just as many spectacular sights and will allow you to experience a winter wonderland – something that many South Africans do not get the pleasure of witnessing.
We meet at the Imperani Guest House in the eastern Free State town of Ficksburg late on the Friday afternoon. It is a comfortable three hour drive from Gauteng. We spend our first evening getting to know each other, while the Bhejane guide briefs us on the next day’s adventure into Lesotho. We enjoy our first hearty meal that the Imperani Guest House is famous for.
That evening your Bhejane guide will elaborate as to what adventure awaits you over the next few days.
After a hearty breakfast, we make our way down to the nearby Lesotho border post and enter Lesotho, crossing the Caledon River. Border post procedures are a mere formality, but you will need a valid passport.
Our route is on tar the whole way and we wind our way slowly up the Maluti Mountains, eventually getting to almost 3 000m above sea level. It is up at this altitude that we will get to experience our first frozen waterfalls, lakes and icicles. Weather and road conditions permitting, we will cross the Motheng Pass and make our way down to the ox-bow area and on to the Afri Ski Resort. While you enjoy the snow, the Bhejane team prepares some easy comfort food with something warm to drink.
Once everyone has enjoyed themselves, it is time to start heading back to Ficksburg. The late afternoon drive is always very special, with the soft light making the area look even more beautiful.
At all times the Bhejane guide leads the convoy sharing road conditions and potential hazards, while at the same time, sharing his knowledge of the area with you on the radio. Once through the border and back at the Imperani Guest House, we enjoy our last evening together, comparing photos, swapping addresses and planning our next adventure.
After yet another delicious Imperani breakfast, we say our goodbyes and head for home.
Epic Zululand – an adventure taking you into the heart of Rhino Conservation, tropical Zululand coastlines, Isimangaliso Wetand Park, the largest estuarine system in Africa, the shores of Lake Sibaya and Kosi Bay, Thembe Elephant Park and home of some of Africa’s biggest tuskers as well as unrivalled birding in Ndumo Game Reserve.
Enjoy the awe-inspiring beauty of Southern Lesotho & some of the most beautiful and scenic landscapes you will ever see including Lesotho’s own Golden Gate, the mighty Senqu (Orange) River, the second highest single drop waterfall in the world, the Gates of Paradise and the highest natural lake in Southern Africa, to name but a few.
In the northern corner of Namibia lies one of the last remaining wilderness areas in the world, the rugged & beautiful Kaokoland. Travel with us along deep gorges and steep valleys before heading onward to the beautiful Kunene, Khumib and ephemeral Hoarusib Rivers through the migratory routes of desert elephants and other wildlife.
