Enjoy the awe-inspiring beauty of Southern Lesotho on a 6 night/ 7-day adventure with Bhejane 4×4 Adventures. This unique trip requires a 4×4 vehicle with high vehicle clearance, low range gear and will compliment your existing 4×4 skills as we traverse several mountain passes – some of which will are fairly technical). This adventure will take you over approximately 800km and will cover some of the most beautiful and scenic landscapes you will ever see!
Included are some of the lesser known wonders of Southern Lesotho; Lesotho’s own Golden Gate, the mighty Senqu (Orange) River, the second highest single drop waterfall in the world, the Gates of Paradise, a Cave House and the highest natural lake in Southern Africa, to name but a few.
The adventure starts in the town of Matatiele in the late afternoon. After checking in at our guest lodge we will enjoy a delicious dinner where we will meet everyone and enjoy a discussion from the tour leader on the adventure that will begin the next day.
After our first breakfast, our adventure starts when we ascend our first pass, Qacha’s Nek Pass, en route to the Lesotho border. Our approximate travelling distance today will be 160km.
Once in Lesotho we will make our way to Sehlabathebe National Park where we will spend the next two nights – along the way conquering three passes namely Suspension Bridge Pass, Melikane Pass and the famed Matebeng Pass.
After traversing Suspension Bridge Pass and Melikane Pass we stop for lunch and spend some time enjoying the historic bushman paintings before tackling the Matebeng pass. This Pass is 20km long and will take us approximately 2 hours to ascend. This particular pass will be undertaken mostly in low range gear.
We will take a break from driving and instead will enjoy the breathtaking undisturbed beauty of the Sehlabathebe National Park.
Situated in the Drakensburg escarpment, this national park boasts magnificent and unusual rock formations, unique wild flowers and alpine flora and rock pools. This is also where the rare minnow fish is found. Mountain Reedbuck, mongoose, jackal, baboons and beared vulture can also found here. Perhaps we will even be able to discover the Crown Jewels of Sehlabathebe, an endemic lily that grows nowhere else in the world!
We will also visit a striking awe-inspiring cave which-overlooks Lesotho’s own Golden Gate rock formations. Our second night is again spent at Sehlabathebe National Park.
Our adventure continues with a drive from Sehlabathebe National Park to Ramabanta.
Approximate distance for this day will be 254km (about 170km on tar)
En route, we will enjoy breath-taking vistas of the Senqu River (Orange in South Africa) as it makes its way around a horseshoe bend – the photographic opportunities abound and there is plenty of time to enjoy the views.
We will also visit the second highest single drop waterfall in the world before eventually, making our way to our lodge at Ramabanta for the night. Hidden deep in the mountains with spectacular views across the valley, our lodge is both tranquil and charming.
We spend most of our time on gravel roads (who knows, we may even need to repair the road in places). The views and our 4×4 route will leave you with unforgettable memories – we will also enjoy our lunch at the site of a waterfall. Our evening will be spent in a hotel in the town of Mohale’s Hoek.
Our last day in Lesotho and the scenery will continue to amaze. We visit a house built into a cave, traverse the Maphooaneng pass have lunch at the highest natural lake in Southern African. We then exit Lesotho and descend the Ongeluksnek Pass.
