Join us on "The Highwayman's Adventure Route" on deep sand tracks through the vast expanse of the world's largest continuous sand mass - the Kalahari. Bring your camera, photographic opportunities abound in an area twice the size of the Kruger National Park.

Our journey takes us from Twee Rivieren to Nossob into the Kaa area of the Transfrontier Park and northwards into a community concession area, approximately 1,5 million hectares.  We then re-enter the Transfrontier Park on the Botswana side and end the trip at Mabuasehube.

Towards the end of summer, presuming reasonable rains have fallen in the area, the Kgalagadi is noted for its large number of resident eagles, such as the Martial, Tawny, Black Breasted, Snake and Bateleur. These are joined in February and March by the migrant raptors, the Booted Eagle and Steppe Buzzard, and the rare Lesser Spotted Eagle. We hope to be there when the numbers of eagles will be at their highest. However, we must not forget all the other wildlife we expect to see in the harsh but magnificent Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

Please note that this is a true adventure safari as we will be bush camping almost every night. However, the Bhejane crew will make it as comfortable as possible.

    The Adventure

Nothing prepares you for the immensity of this reserve, nor its wild, mysterious beauty. There is the immediate impression of unending space and having the entire reserve to yourself.

Waist-high golden grasses seem to stretch interminably, punctuated by dwarfed trees and scrub bushes. Wide and empty pans appear as vast white stretches of saucer-flat earth, meeting a soft, blue-white sky. At night the stars utterly dominate the land; their brilliance and immediacy are totally arresting.

The Central Kalahari game Reserve (CKGR) is the largest, most remotely situated reserve in Southern Africa, and the second largest wildlife reserve in the world, encompassing 52 800 sq kms.

During and shortly after good summer rains, the flat grasslands of the reserve’s northern reaches teem with wildlife, which gather at the best grazing areas. These include large herds of springbok and gemsbok, as well as wildebeest, hartebeest, eland and giraffe.

At other times of the year, when the animals are more sparsely distributed, the experience of travelling through truly untouched wilderness, of seemingly unending dimensions, is the draw.

Please note that this is a true adventure safari as we will be bush camping almost every night. However, the Bhejane crew will make it as comfortable as possible.

    The Adventure

This is a ten-night, eleven-day tented photographic safari that starts in central Botswana at Kubu Island on the Makgadikgadi Pans and ends at Kasane/Chobe in the north.

During the course of our travels, we shall traverse the vast sand flats, which were once the great lakes of Southern Africa, fed by an even greater rivers. Over millions of years, the forces of nature diverted the course of the rivers, changing the face of the land.

Join us on an adventure to discover the marvels of this geological intrigue as we travel westwards from the site of the great lake at the Makgadikgadi Pans around the bottom end of the Okavango Delta, then northward along the Okavango River (with a detour to the mysterious Tsodilo Hills, a sacred rock art site) into Caprivi Strip of Namibia. Once in the Caprivi, we shall drive back east again, crossing the Kwando River and eventually reaching the mighty Zambezi River at the majestic Victoria Falls. The final stop on the tour is the game-rich Chobe River area around the town of Kasane in northern Botswana.
